Counseling Group Q&A

A:

Group Counseling consists of approximately six to twelve members who, over the course of six to ten meetings, each lasting two hours, focus on a specific topic. Under the guidance of a professional counselor, members engage in group interactions, sharing and exchanging ideas. This process assists members in reflecting on their personal state, clarifying their values, understanding others, and finding strategies to deal with troubling issues, ultimately aiming to achieve personal growth.

During the interactive process of group counseling, professional counselors will adjust their leading materials and methods according to factors such as themes and goals. The potential process content ranges from more static verbal discussions, drawing, card selection, mindfulness practice, body scanning, to more dynamic activities such as acting and interactive activities.

There are no specific conditions for participating in group counseling. Group counseling involves more interpersonal interaction, with the aim of stimulating each other's thoughts and feelings through communication, thereby helping members to understand their own state. Therefore, when participating in a group counseling, all you need is to come with an open mind and take a brave step for yourself. You may reap your own unique rewards from group counseling!

Each semester, the Counseling Center organizes various counseling groups based on student needs. Once you have registered through the relevant channels, the group counseling teacher will contact you via phone, text message, or letter. They may also conduct a one-time face-to-face interview with you. The purpose of this is to assess and confirm your personal status, clarify the group's objectives and potential process, reduce information gaps, and focus on mutual consensus to enhance the potential effectiveness of the group. After confirmation and evaluation, all you need to do is wait for the scheduled time and attend punctually!

Similar to individual counseling, we place great emphasis on your feelings and well-being. Therefore, in principle, except for a few exceptions to confidentiality, including the fact that you participate in the group, your basic personal information, or personal experiences revealed within the group, unless you voluntarily inform others, they are all confidential to protect your rights. The exceptions to confidentiality include:

  1. When your conversation involves self-harm, harm to others, and situations that endanger your own or others' life, freedom, property, and safety.
  2. When your conversation involves legal liability, such as the Domestic Violence Prevention Act, the Child and Youth Welfare and Rights Protection Act, the Gender Equity Education Act, the Sexual Assault Crime Prevention Act, the Sexual Harassment Prevention Act, etc.
  3. When it is assessed that your situation needs to be referred to a medical institution, or when assistance from other professionals is needed.
  4. If your situation is assessed by a professional counselor that continuous counseling services are needed after leaving school, your affiliated college psychologist will transition your counseling needs to provide continuous care and assistance (in accordance with the regulations of the Student Transition Counseling and Service Regulations).

Although there are the above exceptions to confidentiality, we will have a thorough discussion and explanation with you in advance to alleviate any possible discomfort and anxiety before we contact other personnel.

Due to the above factors and explanations, we will inform you of your rights and obligations at the first group counseling and complete the signing of the group counseling consent form together.
